The Electronic Frontier Foundation has released a free plug-in for Firefox that insures encrypted connections over wi-fi with major sites such as Twitter, Facebook, Google Search, Paypal, the New York Times, and many more.

You can download the HTTPS Everywhere plug-in at https://www.eff.org/https-everywhere

After installation, you can see whether you connection is secure or not by clicking up in the chrome of your browser to the left of the address bar (see screen grab below.)

The plugin currently works for:
